Today, humanity stands at a crossroads. Beneath the surface of global tension marked by economic instability, political upheaval, the arms race, and international mistrust, lies a fundamental crisis in humanity’s failure to transform negative connections into positive ones.
Kabbalist Yehuda Ashlag (Baal HaSulam) foresaw such a state in his texts, and wrote that if we do not correct the state that we are in, the world will face a third and even a fourth world war. He warned that without correction of the human being, i.e., without changing our inborn egoistic nature that wishes for self-benefit at others’ expense to its altruistic opposite—to wish for the benefit of others through which we enter into a harmonious connection—then we will meet with destruction.
Our world is tightly interconnected but our hearts remain divided. As long as people and nations act out of egoism, seeking only their own benefit at the expense of others, then our myriad developments lead us onto a general collision course. The conditions for world war are set. They only require a small match to ignite an explosion. It could begin anywhere, whether in Asia, Europe, or the Middle East, wherever hatred simmers. We need to understand that it is not due to politics or ideology, but it stems from a much deeper disconnection that exists between us, i.e., that we let our egoistic approach to each other increasingly sour our connections in a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected.
We must not rely on governments or ideologies, whether they be socialism, capitalism, or otherwise, to bring peace. They have all failed. The only force that can prevent a world war is the power of positive human connection above all divisions. This is the most important message that the world needs today.
Although the people in the world who awaken to the need for positive human connection are small in number compared to the amount of people in humanity as a whole, despite seeming insignificant, such people hold incredible power. If every person who hosts a desire for love and connection to spread throughout humanity focuses their attitude on enhancing positive human connections, to reach a state of unity (“Love your neighbor as yourself”) above our egoistic divisions (“Love will cover all crimes”), and then they exemplify and explain such a message to humanity through every means possible (to become “a light unto the nations”), then the influence of this critical mass of people will reverberate. Nature, which fundamentally operates by integral laws of interconnectedness and interdependence, responds precisely to our efforts in positive human connection.
The world needs to learn that there is no other solution. Physical force and the production and acquisition of more and more technology will not save us. What will save us is progress in an area that we do not want to face: developing our attitudes of mutual responsibility, consideration, love, unification, and rising above our egoistic nature toward each other. A global shift to a harmonious and peaceful future depends on our willingness to become as one.
