What Will Be With Us After Death

Today, we are reaching a point of a radical re-evaluation of values. What once seemed valuable, which we fought, lived, and died for, and which we tried to preserve and pass on to future generations, is losing its meaning and feels increasingly empty.

What, then, will truly be valuable?

Only thought.

It might sound too abstract for a person at first. But if we think about it, what in our lives is not abstract?

Thought is what stays with us. It does not perish with the body. The body’s desires, fears, and possessions all vanish, but thought remains.

What, then, is the kind of thought that we should develop? It is a positive attitude to others and to the world. Such thought never disappears. It stays with us constantly because it is outside the narrow and transient range of our egoism, i.e., our desire to enjoy for personal benefit alone. This egoism dies and decomposes with the body. Instead, the thought of a positive attitude to others and to the world lives within the altruistic quality opposite egoism, i.e., in the positive qualities we manage to acquire during our lives. These qualities, such as kindness, love, and care, lift us into another world, one of positive forces of love, bestowal, and connection that are beyond our material existence.

We exist precisely in order to accumulate positive emotions, thoughts, desires, and aspirations that come from the positive attitude we exercise toward others and nature. That is what we take with us.

When we leave this world, we want to have conveyed, as much as possible, a positive attitude toward life, to the world, to people, to our children, grandchildren, and literally everyone possible.

I see this as my mission, and not just mine, but all of ours. This is how Kabbalists throughout all generations understood our purpose. Today, we see horrors, hatred, and division everywhere, and we understand that this darkness urges us to recognize what we need to cultivate and pass on. We are being pushed away from the darkness so that we can move to a positive, harmonious, and peaceful thought of connection.
