Is Love a Force of Nature?

Love is the most powerful force in nature. It creates, generates, gives rise to systems, and sustains life. But why do we call it the “force” of love?

In our world, love means attraction. We feel drawn to something that gives us pleasure, satisfaction, or some kind of inner fulfillment. That “something” can be a sound, a color, a shape, i.e., it does not even have to be a person. But it works the same with people. We are drawn to what gives us pleasure.

Many philosophers discuss how nature loves us. In the wisdom of Kabbalah, we use the term “nature” interchangeably with “the Creator.” But what does it really mean that nature loves us and that we should love nature in return?

Love is the most fundamental law of nature. It is the force of mutual attraction, which enables connection, continuation, and life itself. It is why the act of reproduction, the continuation of life, stems from love. It is not just an emotion but a function that brings about harmony and balance. The systems of nature operate through this mutual desire to give and receive, to sustain one another.

But when we speak of human love, we usually speak of something very different. Human love is based on self-interest, how each person benefits from others. Even if we do good to others, it is because we feel good doing it, or we receive something in return. Pure altruistic love, where we consider only the other’s well-being, is absent from our world. People do not just love without a reason. There is always a personal benefit, even if it is hidden.

That is why love can turn into hatred very quickly. If we love someone, we expect to receive something in return: attention, loyalty, pleasure, and comfort. But if that person betrays us, for instance, they cheat on us, then the very source from which we expected pleasure now causes us pain. That shift creates hatred. Love disappears because it was not based on giving, but on receiving.

So what must change in us to awaken true unconditional love? Reaching unconditional love requires rising above ourselves. That is, no matter how others treat us, whether it is well or poorly, we continue treating them with kindness, care, and respect. When we stop making calculations based on what we receive and start living to give, absolute love becomes possible. Then, and only then, do we make contact with the eternal law of nature: the force of love.
