What Is Hell?

Hell is not a place of fire and brimstone, but an internal spiritual state we experience on our path to attain the purpose of our development, a state of complete balance with nature, which we call “adhesion with the Creator” in the wisdom of Kabbalah.

In our spiritual development, hell is the deep feeling of shame we experience when we perceive our oppositeness in form from adhesion with the Creator. In other words, it is the sensation of being cut off from the quality of love, bestowal, and connection that define the Creator.

When we begin to feel the enormous gap between our innate desire to receive for self-benefit and the Creator’s nature of pure love and bestowal, a terrible shame burns within us. This shame defines hell. It pierces deeper than any physical suffering, because it burns at the very internal sensation where we perceive our “self.”

Paradoxically, however, this very sensation is necessary. Without feeling hell, we cannot awaken to the need for transformation, to rise above our egoistic desires and acquire the quality of bestowal. Therefore, hell is no punishment, but a force of correction that we experience on our path from exiting our egoistic perception of reality and entering the perception of love, bestowal, and connection that is equal to the Creator’s quality. It is the Creator’s way of inviting us to become like Him, to transform our reception into giving, our divisive drives into unifying ones.

Therefore, hell is the inner state where our egoistic desire undergoes a major correction. It is where the desire to enjoy for ourselves alone becomes exposed in all its ugliness, and from this awareness, the longing to resemble the Creator is born. Such longing lifts the soul from the depths of hell into the light of life, adhesion with the Creator, or in other words, Heaven.
