Love of friends is the first true love I attain. It means I love each person in my small group with such intensity that my connection to them rises above anything I might think or feel toward anyone else in the world. This love is not based on emotion or personal preference—it is a conscious effort to bond above all differences, above my natural ego.
From this foundation of love of friends, I grow. My heart expands. Gradually, my perception of who “belongs” to me broadens. I begin to feel connected not only to my group, but to humanity as a whole. This growing connection is called “love of the world.”
Love of the world is the greatest degree of love. It includes all created beings. It is the full embrace of reality as one interconnected system. But I do not arrive there in a moment. I build it, step by step, through my inner work. I work constantly to expand my boundaries, to widen the circle of love from my small circle to the entire world.
This process is my task: to grow love within me until it includes all of creation. That is true love, and that is how I become similar to the Creator, the upper force of love, bestowal, and connection that created and sustains all life.
