What Impact Did William Shatner’s Space Flight Experience Have on His Perspective on Life and Mortality?

When William Shatner, who famously played Captain Kirk in Star Trek, flew into space at the age of 90, thought he would experience the ultimate catharsis, a revelation of the universe’s harmony. Instead, he was struck by overwhelming sadness upon witnessing the stark contrast between the cold emptiness of space and the nurturing beauty of Earth. He described space as “death” and “black ugliness,” while Earth represented life and comfort. His experience led him to reevaluate life’s values, emphasizing the importance of unity among people and the need to protect our planet. He expressed that true beauty and harmony lie in human connection and love rather than in the void of space. Shatner’s reflections align with the “Overview Effect,” a phenomenon experienced by astronauts who gain a new appreciation for Earth’s fragility and humanity’s interconnectedness after viewing it from space.

While Shatner’s eyes opened thanks to his journey, how can masses of people who do not embark into space, and who endure difficult times on Earth with myriad problems, conflicts, and divisions, come to a similar revelation?

Disappointment leads to it. We must reach complete disappointment with the idea that anything positive can come from force or hatred, and we should fully experience this disillusionment.

But if the world has always been ruled by money and power, how can we ever get there? We will come to realize that neither money nor power can bring us anything positive or eternal. Love and positive human connection is the only way to break through our divisive drives and discover a harmonious and peaceful world. That is the conclusion we need to reach.
