It is because we thought that it would lead us to better lives, that we would progress, flourish, and achieve goodness and happiness. Therefore, it has become common to measure success in life by the number of hours that we work. If somebody hears that I work more hours than others, they might think that I have a particularly large salary, or that I hold a special, highly-respected position.
Moreover, we generally do not want a release from such a lifestyle. We have reached a state where our work is our life. Today, one of the first points of interest when we look at people is, “What do they do? What is their work? Where do they work?” Everyone talks about work.
In the past, people talked more about certain hobbies like sports, but today we discuss those things less. Work has taken center stage. It is also quite clear that if we spend ten hours a day in our workplaces, then what else do we have to talk about? We have made our lives revolve around our professions.
The fact that we emphasize work so much is a distortion that emerges from our overblown egoistic desires. It is unnatural. We were not born to work the way we do, and the majority of the work we do is unnecessary.
If we were not born to work so much, then what were we born for? It is to know why we are here, what happened before we were born, what will happen after we die, and what happens with the world, with our inner mental and emotional states, and how we can optimally participate with the forces of nature, the development of the inner human being within us.
Also, we were put here in order to develop our connections with other people. If we were not in a constant individualistic-materialistic competition with one another, then it would be easier for us to come closer together. We would then also take better care of our children and instill in them a different attitude toward each other from childhood.
