What Is the Appeal of Fairy Tales for Adults?

Many people wonder why adults enjoy watching fairy tales, even when they know these stories are not real. Fairy tales, however, are more real than our everyday lives.

What makes a fairy tale so powerful is that it reflects a deeper reality where justice is rewarded, loyalty pays off, and good ultimately triumphs over evil. These stories resonate with us because, deep down, we sense that things are meant to be this way.

The reason we feel an attraction to the triumph of good over evil is because we are in a process of development that leads us to that very happy ending, a state where we rise above our evil egoistic nature in order to discover the good force in nature within positive connections that we establish among each other. On the way, we are like characters who need to journey through many twists, turns, and struggles, through dark labyrinths of our own egoistic nature that constantly demands personal benefit at others’ expense. That is our process of correction and development, where we develop by gradually transforming our egoistic desire for self-benefit alone to a desire to benefit others, and by doing so, reach the happy ending of a completely good life for us all.

Fairy tales are thus prophecies in disguise. They speak about what will end up really happening. The triumph of good over evil is a certainty. Otherwise, the story would never have begun in the first place. A proper fairy tale must end well, not because the author wants it that way, but because that good ending is embedded in the story from the very beginning. Tales that end badly are incomplete. Either the author did not get to finish them, or something remained unsaid.

In the real “fairy tale” that is our life, the conclusion is conceived first, and the storyline—the introduction, the conflicts, and the climaxes—is created to support that end. We are thus in that very developmental arc, which is an educational journey, and which is sometimes filled with blame, pain, or disappointment. We as its characters go through confusions and disappointments of various types. One wants revenge but cannot get it. Another wants freedom but fails to escape. Two lovers try to come together but cannot. Nothing goes right, and we all eventually start asking about who is writing this story.

That is when we begin to discover who is really behind this plot we are parts of. It is nature itself. We mean nature here as the very laws of love, bestowal, and connection that drive our evolution. In the wisdom of Kabbalah, nature is synonymous with the Creator, which describes the upper force guiding our lives from beginning to end. The Creator is the author. Only when we give up trying to fix everything by ourselves do we reach the realization that we are being led by that upper force. From that moment on, the pieces start to fall into place. This upper force, this system of governance, reveals the path to us and guides us to the only true ending, one that is absolutely good.

This fairy tale is about our world right now. We are living through this story. In our time especially, the upper force has begun to reveal itself. The time when humanity finds no other answers, hitting dead ends from every direction, is when the awareness of a higher force orchestrating everything starts to blossom. We are now at a stage where egoistic human nature is becoming more and more apparent as the only evil in reality, and that any path to a good life requires correcting our ego.

When we set on course to correct our egoistic nature to its altruistic opposite, the harsh tale we are currently experiencing will start to shift. It will become softer and kind because it will start pointing us to the source force of nature that authored the story, which initiated and developed it, and which is now guiding us toward its fulfillment.

Where is nature leading us? To an eternal and perfect life where we feel complete love, positive connection, harmony, and peace. That, however, is no fairy tale. It is reality.
