What can help people of Israel today who seek protection, an anchor, security, and safety?
There is a critical point that usually is given zero importance, time, or activity: the point of connection.
I am not speaking about a regular connection, like we usually make in times of distress to overcome enemies, haters, and obstacles standing before us. It is also not a connection that calms us psychologically at a time of a common trouble.
It is rather a unique kind of connection that comes in the form of a special force called “mutual guarantee.” This force is created when we become “as one man with one heart.”
The power of mutual guarantee is so powerful that it has the ability to correct every flaw and corruption. It can protect us from all evil, inside us and outside of us, and it can also bring total goodness into our lives.
Originally, we became a nation when we agreed to be guarantors for one another. That is how we received the Torah, the general rule of “love your neighbor as yourself.” Since then, when we live in mutual guarantee, we can succeed in every field and solve every problem. On the other hand, when the bond of mutual guarantee between us weakens, we experience troubles approaching us from every direction.
About 2,000 years ago, unfounded hatred destroyed us and we went into exile. After we were brought back to this land and built a state, we must finally take a step in the opposite direction. From the distance that has formed between us, from the shattered state we now find ourselves in, we should aim ourselves at closeness and unity. If we learn how to optimally connect among each other, we will rise together to another level of existence. Humanity will then also feel a certain “pull” to positively connect as a result of this critical mass within humanity uniting above its divisive drives.
To reach a state of mutual guarantee, we need a revolution in perception. Such a revolution can come about via an educational-cultural process throughout society. This process should place the construction of connection between us as the highest goal of society. In this process, we should first clarify what connection, unity, mutual guarantee, reciprocity, and “love of Israel” is, and what it means to live like members of a single family.
After such distinctions come to life in our relationships, and we feel warmth and closeness, we will be able to begin searching for solutions to every problem. Ultimately, the power of mutual guarantee depends on the development of a common desire to feel like a warm and loving family, like organs in the same body. Each organ is different and unique, and each has its own role, but all are connected in achieving the harmony called “the life of the body.”
Anyone who has ever broken a leg or an arm knows the strange feeling. You cannot move the broken limb, and suddenly you realize that it is as if it exists on its own, disconnected, not part of the body. When the healing period ends, the body once again enjoys the functioning of the leg or arm, and that limb enjoys its reintegration into the body.
Similarly, if everyone in society connects to everyone, we will function as a complete, beautiful, and healthy system. In such a state, we will discover what enormous treasures we had in our hands all along, and which we were not using. We wasted them because we each thought only of ourselves. In addition, just as a healthy body is not under threat from various pests, so too no one will be able to harm us.
Then, how can we begin this educational-cultural process of awakening mutual guarantee throughout society? There is an entire method that details how to create connecting processes: the integral method of education. It is based on an integral approach in viewing the human being, society, and nature as one whole. Just as in the still, vegetative, and animate levels of nature, all parts are connected in one integral system, we humans must also exist in the same way. But with us humans, we need to reach this state through scrutiny, awareness, and choice. Today, in an interconnected world of increasing interdependence and global threats, it has become quite clear that we will not survive without feeling close.
Our connection will elevate our awareness to the human species’ next level of evolution. We will connect to the single general force of nature. The harmony that can form between us will bring harmony with nature, and we will feel how we become filled with a superpower. It will lift us above our every problem, and bring into our lives higher meaning, upliftment, light, and love.
The people of Israel can be the pioneering force in this matter because we have the force of mutual guarantee in our roots. From here, it can spread to the world as the code of a new life. Doing so will bring Israel support from all directions. Even Israel’s enemies will calm down and become supporters when they feel that a positive force flows from the people of Israel to the world.
If we want to fill ourselves with positive energy, it is worth thinking about a state of positive connection between us in our daily lives. Here is a thought exercise that we can do anytime and anywhere. For instance, say we are driving on the road. Let us imagine how our interactions would carry out if there were a relationship of mutual guarantee between us. Would you cut off your son? Your sister? How would you behave if they were trying to merge into traffic ahead of you?
The purpose of the exercise is to compare today’s lifestyle—where everyone pulls in their own direction and ego runs wild—with a corrected way of life, in a society where everyone feels like siblings.
As it is written in our sources, “all of Israel are friends.” That is, all of Israel are guarantors for one another. These are not moral recommendations, but definitions of the type of connection suited to the integral law of nature. We just need an open heart and a mind to grasp the picture. The power of mutual guarantee is our only hope to reach a better life.
