We hear the principle “Love your neighbor as yourself,” but most of the time it does not truly enter us. We might agree with it in theory, admire it, or repeat it, yet still not feel that it is the one gate we need to pass through.
So how do we finally come to it?
By exhausting every other possibility.
A person searches in many directions. We try success, knowledge, power, money, relationships, ideas, ideologies, different methods of self-improvement, and countless substitutes for true connection. We keep walking along the wall, looking for another opening.
But eventually, we discover that there are no other gates. There is only emptiness. This is why disappointment is necessary. Not a small disappointment in one thing or another, but a deep realization that nothing else can provide the answer. When every substitute loses its power, only one direction remains: adhesion and brotherhood.
We do not yet truly understand what brotherhood means. We use the word, but usually we mean some pleasant social relationship, mutual sympathy, or shared interests.
Brotherhood in the spiritual sense is much deeper than any such concepts. It is when people come into one desire and one intention. It is a state of complete connection, where everyone is included in everyone else. Instead of living as separate individuals who happen to cooperate, we begin to feel ourselves as parts of one system.
Kabbalah calls this system “Adam.” Adam is not simply a single person who existed in history. It is the image of humanity connected as one body, one heart, one desire. Every person remains unique, but all incorporate into a single living whole.
This is the future state toward which humanity is evolving.
It should not appear to us as a fantasy or a distant ideal. It should rather be positioned before us as a necessity that is real and attainable.
Why, then, do we need all the wandering, mistakes, and disappointments?
It is precisely so that we will arrive at this conclusion ourselves.
If the gate were obvious from the beginning, we would not choose it. We would follow it because nothing else was known. But after seeking everywhere else, after becoming tired of substitutes and false solutions, we begin to understand why this gate is the only one.
Then “love your neighbor as yourself” is no longer a slogan. It becomes the answer. And what seemed hidden was there all along.
