One of the greatest mistakes we make in life is constantly looking at others.
We compare ourselves with them: what they have achieved, how they live, what they think, and what they expect from us. Then we try to adjust ourselves accordingly.
But why should I be like someone else?
Every person has a different soul. I cannot be another person, and another person cannot be me. Therefore, constantly comparing myself with others only takes me farther away from discovering what is truly mine.
Imagine if Einstein had spent his life looking around and trying to think like everyone else. Would he have accomplished what he did? A person must listen to what comes from within.
I have to discover: This is what I can do. This is what I want. This is what I believe.
This does not mean acting against other people. It does not mean rejecting society or deliberately behaving differently from everyone else. The important point is that the direction should come from inside me rather than being copied from someone else.
I have to pull my own “I” out of myself.
Of course, this is not easy. We are constantly surrounded by other people’s opinions, examples, expectations, and judgments. Sometimes it becomes difficult even to distinguish between what I truly want and what I have absorbed from those around me.
So, figuratively speaking, close your eyes.
Imagine that you are alone.
Everyone else disappears, but you remain with yourself. You cannot run away from yourself. Then ask: What is truly mine?
Even if I make a mistake by following this inner direction, it is my mistake. I can learn from it and continue. There is a certain comfort and freedom in knowing that I am walking my own path rather than living according to somebody else’s life.
Once I begin to recognize what is truly mine, I have to hold on to it.
Then, in order to realize it, I will need to create the right environment around myself, an environment that helps me develop what I have discovered instead of suppressing it. However, even then, the inner direction remains mine.
There will certainly be difficulties along the way. There will be waves, disturbances, doubts, and moments when it seems easier to abandon my direction and follow everyone else.
But these disturbances do not have to take me away from myself.
On the contrary, overcoming them can bring me even closer to myself.
Therefore, pay less attention to comparisons.
Listen inwardly.
Discover what is yours, grasp it, and begin realizing it.
The path may not always be smooth, but at least it will truly be your path.
