It is difficult to categorize commandments into more or less important, but Rabbi Akiva explained that “Love your neighbor as yourself” is the most important of all the commandments.
It is because “love your neighbor as yourself” includes all the corrections we need to undergo in changing our inborn egoistic nature into the upper nature of love and bestowal. We go through this transformation by working on relating to others as we relate to ourselves.
This egoistic-to-altruistic transformation leads us to adhesion with the Creator—the quality of love, bestowal and connection—which is also the discovery of the purpose of creation, to which the Torah was intended to lead us.
