As I move from one dead end to another, I actually ascend. These rungs gradually create within me the desires, qualities, intellect, and feelings that let me discover the meaning of life.
The meaning of life exists, but initially I cannot see it, feel it, or even formulate what it is.
I am like a small child crawling on hands and knees from one step to the next, constantly trying to climb higher. Through these efforts, I develop until I begin to understand the meaning of the ascent itself. Suddenly, I discover that the meaning is found between the rungs.
Is there an end to this ascent? Practically speaking, there is not. And why should there be if I begin to feel that the process itself is life?
Life is precisely in encountering disappointment at each step and then finding the strength, aspiration, and goal to continue. I have to continually scrutinize, what for? Why? For what purpose? What is the correct goal? What is the right decision?
Through these questions and the effort to rise, I begin to feel myself growing and creating.
Eventually, I no longer feel such a strong need to reach some final rung. I begin to receive fulfillment from traversing the rungs themselves. Between them, I discover wisdom and clarity.
This is the meaning of the principle, “From Your actions I will know You.” From the rungs themselves, from the way they are prepared for me, and from discovering that I was created specifically to rise above them, I gradually begin to attain the One who created these rungs.
