The purpose of creation is to elevate a person internally from the animate level of existence, which is called the “level of beast,” to the level of the human being, which is one of similarity with the Creator, the upper force of love and bestowal. (In Hebrew, the word for “human” [“Adam”] means “similar” [“Domeh”], from “Adameh le Elyon” [“similar to the most high”]).
Therefore, at the beginning of our day-to-day dealings, we need to elevate ourselves from the animate level, where we concern ourselves solely with our own desires and those of our families, to the level of the Creator, which concerns itself with humanity’s benefit, viewing everyone and everything as a single integral whole. The latter is the biggest desire that exists in nature.
Accordingly, Kabbalist Yehuda Ashlag (Baal HaSulam) writes to us (in his article, “The Love of God and the Love of Man”) about two parts in the Torah: between man and the Creator, and between man and man, that they are one and the same. That is, in order to internally elevate ourselves to the level of the Creator, we need to concern ourselves with rising in love for our fellow man.
