Love between a parent and their child is indeed the strongest manifestation of love in nature. However, we should reach a level where we relate to other people as a loving parent relates to their children.
However, if we take steps into developing such a love toward others as a parent toward their children, if we read material on how we can achieve such love every day and honestly check ourselves, we then discover that we simply cannot do it. We cannot truly love others this way. At that moment, we might say that we cannot love others to the same extent as we love our children. Yet this is still not a prayer. It is a stage of examination. We begin to measure our attitude to others and realize how far we are from the state of love for others. By doing so, we discover the extent to which we need correction.
From this realization, a real request begins to form. We approach the source force in nature, a quality of love, bestowal, and connection that creates and sustains all life, one that we call “the Creator” in the wisdom of Kabbalah. We make an appeal to this force, to the Creator, and demand correction of our nature that constantly prioritizes self-love over the love of others. We understand that we cannot change ourselves and that the only one who can correct us is the Creator. But the Creator acts only in accordance with our demand, request, and plea.
This is a spiritual process, and theoretically, it is very clear. First, we envision the ideal state of reaching a genuine attitude to love others. Then we try to approach that attitude and discover that we cannot. This recognition awakens a genuine request for help. Then, we turn to the Creator and ask Him to perform the correction that we cannot perform by ourselves.
So if we truly wish to reach the state of loving others and realize that we cannot do it alone, we ask for it, and this request becomes the beginning of a genuine prayer.
