Do People Know That Chow Yun Fat Lives a Very Ordinary Life Despite His Extreme Wealth?

Chow Yun-Fat, the Hong Kong actor and filmmaker, is a millionaire, yet he lives on a modest budget, takes public transportation, and buys clothes only on sale, saying, “As long as it is comfortable, I do not need anything else.” For 17 years he used a simple phone, and only recently replaced it with a smartphone. He says he does not need wealth for the sake of wealth.

He was created this way. Some people naturally enjoy such a lifestyle, as it is simply how they feel best. This is not the overcoming of egoism, i.e., the desire to enjoy at the expense of others, but the expression of their nature. Their egoism is balanced.

On the other hand, there are many people with enormous egoism, who apply themselves entirely, ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of some earthly, egoistic goal. I actually feel a closer connection with such people. Why? It is because they manifest the great force of egoism that exists in humanity. They are like a mirror that shows us the true scale of our inner self-serving drive, and through them, humanity will eventually recognize the evil of egoism.

While people might admire someone like Chow Yun-Fat for his simplicity, I am closer to those who burn with desire, i.e., those who make millions and billions, even stepping over others to do so. They are acting out the great egoism of nature, and in doing so, they serve the general law of nature by accelerating humanity’s realization that egoism is futile, empty, and ultimately harmful.

Their excesses help us understand that such egoism does not lead to any good goal. This awareness, born of their visible example, is necessary for humanity. Through them, we learn what we need to correct within us.

Will this awareness come quickly? Yes, it will. It will come when egoism grows to the point where its corruption becomes undeniable to all. Ideally, this process could happen in a positive way. If not, it will happen through suffering. Let us hope we can choose the positive way.
