On this day commemorating the passing of Kabbalist Isaac Luria, the ARI, we remember a soul unlike any other. As Kabbalist Yehuda Ashlag (Baal HaSulam) wrote, “If I had a tongue that praises, I would praise that day when his wisdom appeared almost as the day when the Torah was given to Israel.” Everything we know in the wisdom of Kabbalah, our understanding of the Creator, the upper worlds, the path of spiritual ascent, comes to us through the ARI.
He opened the system of creation before us, explaining the structure of the lights and vessels, the order of spiritual progress, and the way for each of us to rise in connection with the upper force, the Creator. Through his writings, we receive the light that constructs and revives the soul. Without him, we would remain in the dark.
While we commemorate his passing, we should understand that the ARI is a living force within the spiritual system, a guide who walks before us. Connecting to him means applying his method, i.e., uniting with one another, yearning for the Creator, and aiming for the attainment of the purpose of creation through what he left us. The gates he opened are still open today, and when we unite “as one man with one heart,” or in other words, connecting as one soul, we awaken the reforming light—the force that corrects the soul—among us.
The ARI included within his soul all others. He is the one the Creator placed at the entrance to the spiritual path. If we wish to attract the reforming light and rise spiritually, it is through the method he revealed.
May we be worthy to follow his path. May we honor him by living what he prepared for us. And may his soul continue to guide us on our journey toward the purpose of creation, adhesion with the Creator.
