In Hebrew, the word for “rain” (“Geshem”) contains the foundation, the root, and the beginning, of all corporeal life (the Hebrew word for “corporeality” is “Gashmiyut,” which shares the same linguistic root). This is because rain is essentially a blessing that descends from the heavens to the earth, i.e., from the upper spiritual reality that is filled with the force of love and bestowal—the Creator’s quality—to the lower corporeal reality where our self-serving desires operate. In other words, rain symbolizes the Creator’s benevolent attitude to His created beings, and it is a great, benevolent spiritual blessing that descends from the upper spiritual world, which manifests in our corporeal world in the form of rain: water that comes down from above.
In its inner spiritual meaning, this great blessing from above sustains us and grants us life. Rain, or more specifically, water, refers to spiritual water: upper and lower waters. It is the force of nature, the Creator’s kind and benevolent attitude that descends to us and becomes expressed corporeally in the Creator’s actions upon us.
When a person feels that they have dried up from within, it is an inner request for rain, i.e., this inner sense of spiritual vitality. Similar to how in our mother’s womb, we are immersed in water and emerge from the womb in waters, likewise when we feel internally dry, it is a sign of a need for a certain spiritual nourishment.
In a spiritual sense, rain or water means “mercy” (“Rachamim” in Hebrew), which is what we essentially ask for whenever we feel bad.
