What Does Passover Mean to You?

We have no more important or greater inner state than Passover. It marks an inner revolution that takes place within a person, where we receive the force of bestowal and connection, which we do not possess from the outset. We are all born and develop with a desire to receive only for ourselves, and when a new force comes to us, the force of bestowal, we begin to understand that an inner revolution is taking place, that we are indeed capable of rising above ourselves, connecting with one another, and investing in others. This is essentially what Passover is: an exodus from the control of the desire to receive, called “Egypt,” to the desire to bestow, called “the Land of Israel.”

This exodus is quite complex. We need to remain under the control of the desire to receive for a long time in order to gain awareness of it, to understand that we are incapable of leaving it on our own. Only after we try, by performing various actions to break free, praying, asking, and searching, do we finally come to agree that we want to connect with friends, that we need a society that we can devote ourselves to, and through which we can receive the force of bestowal. Accordingly, we can rise above our ego into a desire that is entirely to bestow outward, beyond ourselves, through others and to the force of love, bestowal, and connection that is the Creator.

To the extent that we imagine this transition, envisioning this revolution that needs to take place within, it progresses our spiritual development and shortens our spiritual path. This is, in fact, the purpose of our lives, for there is no other benefit to our existence. We are born in order to receive, live in order to receive at every opportunity, and die in order to receive. That is unless, during our time in this world we undergo this transformation, transition, and inner revolution, where we suddenly feel that from the desire to receive, where we think only of ourselves, we become capable of thinking about others as we do of ourselves. That is, to exit the intention to receive, to stop being self-directed, and begin to be directed at others.

This matter is above nature; no matter how much we try, we cannot truly imagine it. But when it does come, we immediately understand that it is what the Kabbalists mean by the exodus from exile to freedom. This force that we receive, the ability to think about others, to make calculations for the benefit of others and for the whole world outside of us, this force is called “the force of faith,” “the force of bestowal,” and “the force of the Creator.”

To the extent that we await it, we attract this force closer to us, until it finally dresses within us, and then we will feel ourselves existing in something entirely different from anything we have felt before. Let us hope that this will happen to each of us, and to all of us together.
