When we feel a terrible betrayal, when we are burning within and can barely endure it, at that very moment, or at least after the first fire subsides a little, we need to redirect everything to the source from which it came. We should not direct it to the person who seems to have betrayed us, but to the source force that created and sustains reality, the Creator.
Did that person whom we perceive as betraying us really have anything to do with it? The more we attain a truer picture of reality, the more we will see that the person who seemingly betrayed us is a puppet, and the puppeteer is the Creator.
We cannot demand anything from the one who “betrayed” us. We are only instruments. When we begin to see it this way, calmness gradually comes. We stop seeing traitors and enemies around us. We see only puppets, and above them the Creator who pulls the strings.
Instead of hating or blaming someone, we need to change ourselves and our attitude to the Creator. If we begin to direct ourselves at seeing the Creator behind everything happening to us, then we will have to completely redefine truth and falsehood, and loyalty and betrayal. These concepts end up dissolving. There is no betrayal on behalf of a person because there is no independent “person” who has the ability to betray. There is no love or hate between people in the way we imagine it, no devotion or loyalty in the usual sense. Everything is a relationship between the person and the Creator.
Naturally, when we begin to understand this, the first feeling might be: “Then I hate Him!” Of course. If we hate anyone, in fact, we hate the Creator. All of our relationships are with Him alone. Everything that appears as good or evil between people is arranged by Him. He stages all these stories, dramas, and mysteries so that we will finally set the world aside and deal with Him directly.
Why does He do this? It is so that we will become pure in our attitude, either absolute egoists who openly oppose Him, or absolute altruists who adhere to Him. He does not tolerate halfway states. Therefore, we must tune ourselves solely to the Creator and deal only with Him.
How does hatred turn into love? It turns into a prayer. A prayer that we wish to see His actions behind everything that happens, in ourselves and around us. It is that we want to discover that “there is none else besides Him,” as it is written. This is the main prayer, that He will reveal this to us.
That is the most fundamental transformation we can undergo. It changes everything in our lives. It overturns the entire picture of reality. Where we thought that we were connected to other people, dependent on them, and acting toward them, we instead discover that there is no one and nothing besides the single force of love and bestowal—the Creator—positioned behind everything and everyone. In such a realization, the whole world becomes transformed.
