Nature is not punishing us. This is a misunderstanding.
Nature is a perfectly balanced, self-regulating system. It always tries to soften its reactions, to compensate for our violations, and to protect the integrity of life. It has an enormous margin of safety. But we have already exceeded every boundary. We have distorted nature to such an extent that it can no longer compensate for our actions.
So, nature does not punish us, but we experience our growing imbalance with nature in negative ways. Just as a car can tolerate a few mechanical issues and still move forward, until the moment everything collapses, so too with nature. We have reached the point where systems are beginning to fail.
Moreover, the root cause of phenomena such as natural disasters is not carbon or industry or technology. It is human relationships. As the highest level of nature, the quality of our relationships holds the most powerful influence over nature’s lower levels: the still, vegetative, and animate.
Therefore, our experience of nature depends solely on how we relate to each other. If we remain egoistic, divided, and indifferent to each other, we will continue evolving in a growing imbalance to nature’s altruistic, connected, and caring qualities. And on the contrary, if we turn toward one another with goodwill, responsibility, and mutual concern, then we will enter into balance with nature, and experience its influence as positive.
