In a wolf pack, there is a remarkable sense of mutual responsibility. Wolves are capable of taking care of a disabled, crippled, or elderly member of the pack. They feed the elderly member chewed food, just as they feed their puppies, and they remain close even to the point of sharing their burdens. In this sense, the pack cares for all its members.
However, there are also harsh laws of survival in nature. In years of extreme hunger, when the pack simply cannot sustain everyone, it might no longer be able to carry the responsibility of feeding those who are weak. In such cases, the elderly themselves accept this reality. Nature operates according to the law of survival of the whole system. Therefore, there are individuals who sacrifice themselves so that the pack as a whole can continue to live.
Normally, the pack takes care of everyone, the young, weak, and elderly. This is the natural instinct of a collective organism. However, when circumstances become so difficult that the group cannot sustain the weak, the decision is made according to what will most optimally ensure the continuation of the next generation. The young and the strong are preserved because they carry the future of the pack.
From this we see that the fundamental principle in nature is the survival of the whole community. The life of the group stands above the life of the individual. From this we can draw serious conclusions for human society.
We still have much to learn even from wolves. Humanity must think deeply about how our society is organized. We must ask how to restructure it so that it becomes healthier, more balanced, and that the value of mutual responsibility becomes elevated to a main value. Doing so requires serious education of adults, children, and the generations to come.
We are responsible for several generations ahead. Therefore, we would be wise to start rethinking and changing the social order now so that the future society will be more harmonious and stable than the one we live in today.
