One of my students asked me this very question. A Kabbalist educates himself by first determining one fundamental thing: that it is the Creator who is educating him. This is the biggest difficulty and the main work. From the very beginning of my path with my teacher, RABASH, I understood that everything depends on maintaining constant inner contact with the Creator. It is extremely difficult not to detach from this thought, not to lose it amid daily life. But if a person manages to grasp it—even subconsciously—and not let go, if he constantly feels that he is connected to the Creator, then true education begins precisely from this point.
The Creator does not educate us by example in the way it is customary in our world, because in fact our entire life consists of His examples. Every state you find yourself in, every moment, is an example of His education. If a person begins to say to himself again and again, “This comes from the Creator. What does He want from me now? How should I react? How should I act?”—this already becomes a great spiritual achievement.
It is true that a person cannot understand what the Creator wants from him at first. You can say that everything comes from the Creator, but you cannot yet grasp for what purpose a particular state was given. But this is unimportant. What matters is to constantly attribute everything to the Creator and to keep asking inwardly what He wants from you. Continue asking until the Creator Himself begins to become revealed and clarify this. This inner questioning is called raising MAN.
In reality, you never detach from the Creator. He constantly holds you, as if by the scruff of the neck. And your work is to develop sensitivity to this grip. If suddenly you feel that it is gone, you immediately turn around and ask, “Where did He go? Why don’t I feel Him?” This is already a very good, pleasant state. Why should one run away from it?
