Dr. Michael Laitman To Change the World – Change Man

Do Our Choices Reflect Who We Are or Are We Just Products of Our Environment?

We spend our entire lives fulfilling desires that are imposed on us from the outside. In that sense, for the most part, we are not ourselves at all.

From early childhood we are shaped by our environment. Look at how small children constantly learn from adults and imitate them. If you call a cup by a different name, the child will repeat it after you and accept it as natural. If you teach a child a certain action, they will copy it again and again until it becomes habit. Then, that habit enters their nature. They will instinctively prefer that action, even if there are more reasonable or useful options, because habit becomes second nature. By fulfilling what they have grown accustomed to, they feel pleasure.

This is how we are all formed. We are imprints of the surrounding society. Our tastes, opinions, goals, and values are absorbed from others. None of us is actually “ourselves” in the sense that we independently chose our inner program. We are products of influence.

So when can we truly become “ourselves”? Today, such a desire has started awakening, but only in a relatively small amount of people. Such people begin to ask about the purpose of existence, about the apparent meaninglessness of the world as it is presented to them. Millions of people are already asking this question. But millions are still not billions. The awakening has begun, yet it has not embraced all of humanity.

To become oneself means to rise above the imprint of society and begin to search for the root of one’s soul, for the true source from which one was created. Only from there can a person begin to live not by imposed desires, but by a conscious connection with the purpose of creation.
