When I was young, I often asked myself, “What comes next?” First you go to school, then to college, then work, family, and so on. But since I could not find a real answer to that question, I felt no desire to study or pursue anything in particular. I often found myself in a state of apathy. If there is no clear purpose, no understanding of why we do anything, then all the efforts of life seem empty and meaningless.
This feeling comes from the inner “I” that develops within a person. A person begins to ask, “What do I live for? Why do I exist?” When this question awakens strongly, it creates a very heavy inner state. Everything appears meaningless, yet life continues to push us forward and demand that we participate in it.
Our entire life is actually the formation and development of this inner “I.” It gradually grows within a person and eventually begins to search for its source and its purpose. And this inner “I” is directly connected with the upper force. The connection reveals itself precisely through the question about purpose: “For what? Why do I live?”
This question passes through every person, but in different intensities. In some people it appears only faintly and disappears quickly. In others it arises powerfully and persistently. A person in whom this question awakens seriously has the opportunity to develop it and eventually receive answers.
In a sense, there are indeed “threads” from above that connect the upper force with a person’s inner “I.” These threads awaken questions, impulses, desires, and inner searches. They guide a person along a certain path of development.
But how can we understand why one inner state appears at one moment and another at a different moment? Why does one “I” suddenly dominate while another fades? To understand this fully, a person must reveal their soul, i.e., their entire connection with the higher degree. Then one begins to see why they are drawn in a certain direction and not another, why particular thoughts and desires arise at specific moments.
Everything in creation is programmed. The beginning of creation, the end of creation, and all the intermediate stages are already known within the general system of nature. Is there anything that is not predetermined in this picture? Yes, there is. It is how a person will realize their freedom of will within this process.
The path itself and the developmental stages exist. But how a person participates in them, how consciously they join this process, and how they respond to the inner awakening, is given to the person. In this is the unique role of human freedom. Yes, much is determined by the general program of creation, but a person’s personal realization of it still depends on them.
