When humanity finds itself surrounded by confusion and darkness, we naturally ask: Why does the Creator not give us even a small ray of light? Why does He not show us clearly where to go?
According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, He cannot do this because it would deprive us of the very thing we are meant to acquire, which is freedom.
Our egoistic nature is completely opposite to the Creator. The purpose of our development is not simply to be attracted to goodness because it feels pleasant. We need to independently choose to become similar to the Creator, despite our egoism and the darkness that conceals Him from us.
If the Creator openly revealed His light, we would naturally run toward it. We would be attracted by the pleasure and fulfillment contained in it. But then we would not be free. We would simply be following what attracts us, just as we instinctively pursue any pleasure in this world.
The purpose of creation is much higher.
A person needs to eventually become independent and equal in qualities to the Creator. From everything we discover in ourselves and in the universe, we must consciously construct within ourselves an image that resembles Him. We must choose love above hatred, connection above separation, and bestowal above egoistic reception, not because we are compelled by an obvious reward, but because we ourselves choose these qualities.
This is why periods of darkness are necessary.
Before the final correction where humanity will enter into a state of harmony, peace, eternity, and perfection, humanity will have to discover the full extent of its egoistic nature. This can appear as chaos, hostility, and an increasing inability to understand how to live together. Yet darkness becomes revealed only when the possibility of revealing light exists alongside it.
Therefore, the revelation of darkness should not lead us to despair. On the contrary, it gives us an opportunity to respond correctly.
We can counter darkness with light.
The more humanity understands what is happening to it—what egoism is, why it separates us, and what kind of connection nature requires from us—the more consciously we can pass through these states. Knowledge does not eliminate the stages we need to undergo, but it enables us to recognize them and move through them correctly.
We are not shown darkness merely so that we will suffer. We are shown the contrast between our egoistic nature and the quality of the Creator so that we can freely choose which one we want to resemble.
The Creator will not make that choice for us.
Our task is to reach the point where, precisely from within the darkness, we ourselves choose the light.
