What does it mean to come closer to the Creator? We usually imagine closeness in terms of distance. But the Creator is not somewhere far away from us. Drawing closer to the Creator means acquiring His quality of bestowal and love, which means developing an endless concern for others.
When we begin to care for another person instead of constantly thinking about ourselves, we enter a completely different perception of life. We begin to feel that this concern does not end. It leads us toward the sensation of eternity.
Today, the idea of eternal life sounds unrealistic to us. We immediately associate life with the physical body, and since the body exists for a limited time, we cannot imagine what eternity could mean.
This is because our entire perception is centered on ourselves.
I constantly feel myself: What do I need? What will happen to me? What will I gain? What will I lose? As long as my existence is enclosed within this calculation, I naturally experience myself as finite.
However, if I can transfer my concern from myself to others, something changes. It is as though I move myself into them. I begin to exist within my attitude toward others rather than within my concern for myself.
There, I begin to sense infinity.
This is what it means to come closer to the Creator. The Creator is the quality of absolute care for others. Therefore, if I can forget about myself and genuinely think about another without secretly calculating what I will receive in return, I begin to acquire the sensation of eternity.
Time gradually disappears from this perception, and what remains is sensation.
This is the purpose toward which our lives are directing us. Everything surrounding us is ultimately given so that we can rise above self-concern and come closer to the Creator.
Even life’s hardships, all the suffering, illness, conflict, and tragedy we experience, connect to this process. This does not make the pain itself good. Instead, according to Kabbalah, we require the revelation of the evil inclination in order to understand what it means to rise above it.
Without experiencing our egoistic nature, we would have nothing above which to build the opposite quality.
We cannot recognize good without first discovering evil. We cannot understand selfless concern without encountering the powerful tendency to care only about ourselves.
Therefore, our task is not to erase the evil inclination but to rise above it.
Each time I rise above the calculation for myself and direct my concern toward another, I take another step toward the Creator.
And in that attitude toward another, I begin to discover something that cannot be measured by the lifetime of the body: the sensation of eternity.
