Is the Baby in the Womb Influenced by the Mother’s Thoughts?

Just as the fetus develops in its mother’s womb, so we all develop in the womb of nature—the still, the vegetative, the animate, and human beings. We learn to build increasingly complex, refined connections among ourselves, until we become one system—a system that operates in mutuality, complementarity, and full integration.

At the peak of our development we will function like different cells in one body, and this will open before us a new reality, a higher dimension of perception. True, at present it might be unclear that this is the direction toward which the evolution of the human species is leading, but even the fetus in the womb has no tools to identify what exactly awaits it outside.

Be that as it may, that same fetus that develops from a drop of seed within the woman’s body begins to advance toward that exalted goal. Cells and mechanisms accumulate within it, already entering into some kind of small integral system.

And if I, as a mother, want it to grow within me in the best possible way, that all the stages of pregnancy and birth pass safely, then it is worthwhile for me to think about that great integral system, to draw before my eyes a connected, perfect, beautiful humanity, in harmony with all of nature, with the entire environment. As it is written, “the end of the act is in the initial thought.”

I want the baby who will be born to me to come into the world connected, integrated, and whole, and I thus need to already nourish it with an integral outlook on the development of creation. My attitude toward others and toward reality as a whole influences not only the approach to life that the baby will have, but also shapes the nature of the connections that form in the baby’s brain and in additional bodily mechanisms.

Mistakenly, we think that the fetus in the womb has no response, but there is response, and also learning and acquisition of much wisdom. It is not for nothing that it is said in the sources that a fetus in its mother’s womb sees and observes from one end of the world to the other. In fact, in the womb it receives the foundations of the software of life. When it is born, it is not an empty flesh-and-blood body, but already contains many things that it needs to develop.

The baby will grow up into a child and an adolescent who will enter an increasingly broad environment and will need to learn how to exist harmoniously with myriad contrasting forces. The integral influence that the fetus absorbed already from the womb, and the integral education that will come as a continuation of it, will help such a person develop in an optimal fashion, to be a connected person, one capable of forming harmonious connections, being an active part of the system, understanding it, sensing their place within it, finding mutuality between themselves and society as a whole.

Parents-to-be who hold such a broad picture before their eyes should also take care of the environment into which the child is about to be born now. What kind of atmosphere will there be in relationships at home, in the family, in kindergarten, in school, on social networks, in communication, and in the media? What values and examples do parents want their child to see at every turn?

In the end, there is no escaping the great rule of “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This is the definition of complete integrality, and the forces of nature are advancing us toward its realization. In a world that has become so interconnected, with such high mutual dependence and weapons of war that can destroy the planet with a single push of a button, love of others is no longer merely a pleasant recommendation. We will be unable to survive in tomorrow’s world without developing an integral feeling that we are all one family.

Therefore, it is worth thinking about such ideas throughout the period of pregnancy. Of course, many questions arise here and there is much to clarify, and everything is learned in depth in the integral approach to education within a small group framework.

Toward birth, it is very important that the man give the woman full support, a feeling that he is together with her, ready to complement all her efforts, standing by her side, protecting her, grateful that she is bringing him a child into the world.

It is also worthwhile to emphasize the exalted goal toward which they are now approaching. In the birth of new life they are partners with the general life force at the foundation of creation, the force that develops all of us toward sensing a higher reality. The more the woman feels herself to be part of great nature, the easier it will be for her to carry out her special mission, and the pains of labor will be sweetened.

The following is an affirmation that a pregnant woman can use to organize her thoughts in the direction mentioned here:

“I am in the most important role in creation. I am the center of the world, the center of reality, developing the soul right now. I am passing the fetus from within me outward, and together with it I am emerging to a new degree of existence—being born myself to a higher level of perception.”

May we all have an easy birth.
