What Are Some Examples of Collective Responsibility?

In a wolf pack, when the mother goes hunting, other members of the pack take care of her pups. They watch over them, play with them, feed them, and teach them the basic rules of life in the pack, such as how to hunt, behave, and relate to others. The attitude toward the pups is extremely tender. Any adult wolf is ready to share food with them and participate in their upbringing. This is one of the reasons why the wolf pack is so united and effective.

What we see here is a process of collective upbringing. The entire society cares not only for its own offspring but for the next generation as a whole. For us humans, this seems almost impossible. A person naturally feels attached only to their own child and has difficulty relating to someone else’s child in the same way. However, such a state becomes possible when people begin to feel that they are part of one common whole.

This is exactly what the wisdom of Kabbalah speaks about. When we understand that we are connected in a single system and that our survival depends on this unity, then the attitude toward others changes. We begin to realize that without mutual responsibility, we simply will not survive, neither us nor our children.

In such a perception, a neighbor’s child becomes just as important to us as our own. From the perspective of our current egoistic nature, where we each desire enjoyment and well-being at the expense of others, this seems unrealistic. However, it is precisely the state humanity must reach. Only when we begin to feel that we are one collective organism will such an attitude become natural. And it must become this way if we are to build a healthy and sustainable human society.
