From childhood we are tied to this world by a thin “string,” and indeed, this world suppresses us from the very beginning. We grow into its habits, values, and fears, and we do not even think of escaping. Somewhere inside we sense that there is freedom, that there is something beyond this familiar framework, but we are afraid to take the step toward it.
Why are we afraid? Because to break free means to overcome ourselves, our habits, attitude toward the world, and relationships with others, i.e., everything that has shaped us. We would have to cancel all of this and rise above it. This is what frightens us. Here we have a home, food, a defined existence. Out there is the unknown. That is what terrifies us.
It is not I who urge people to break free. The great sages of Kabbalah speak about it. They themselves took this step. They say that we must rise above this attraction to the earth, above egoistic gravity, and then we will see another world. We will see ourselves differently, and life and the entire universe in a completely new way.
Did they have special courage? No. It was given to them by nature. It was not their personal heroism. It was an awakening from above, from their inner essence. And others can follow their advice, accumulating within themselves a reserve of energy and effort that will one day let them break free from this attraction.
If it seems that you try for years and nothing works, this too is part of the process. It is accumulation. Just as a rocket gathers fuel before it can leave the earth’s gravity, so a person accumulates inner strength until the moment of breakthrough.
How can we not despair when so much time passes? It is by understanding that there is no other way. If you truly feel tied to this “post” by a “rope,” and you want to leave it, then you must continue. There is simply no alternative. Eventually, if you are “lucky,” and we say this only because we do not know all the laws governing reality, you will gather enough force to break the rope and run free, like a little elephant released into an open field. If not, you remain tied until another opportunity arises.
What increases this strength? Unity with others and the study of the laws of the upper world. Alone it is far more difficult; together it is much more likely. We see from the ancient Kabbalists, and even from those closer to us in time, that such liberation is possible. Otherwise, earthly life would have no foundation at all.
Earthly life has meaning only if we use it to take this step, to break away from egoistic gravity. That is its purpose. When we break free, we enter a free space governed by different laws, those of bestowal. Freedom from egoism, i.e., from the desire to enjoy for self-benefit alone, is real freedom.
In this world, our actions are egoistic. We are led by our nature. In the upper world, we act freely, above egoism. And yet, deep down, I do not think we truly want this freedom so strongly. We speak about freedom, but we imagine it in childish ways—just running away from the rope. We do not yet understand what genuine freedom is.
True freedom is freedom from egoism, and that is spiritual freedom.
