Why Are Most People Afraid to Leave Everything Behind and Start Anew?

From the very beginning, we are tied to this world by a thin “string,” and this world suppresses us from childhood. We sense that there is freedom somewhere beyond, yet we are afraid to take even a single step toward it. Why? It is because everything here is familiar. We have a home, food, routine, and our security. However, beyond this rope is the unknown, and the unknown frightens us more than any suffering we already know.

To break free, we need to overcome ourselves, our habits, attitude toward the world, toward others, and toward life itself. We must annul this inner gravity that constantly pulls us down.

Indeed, we are afraid of doing so. It is not because we are weak, but because our nature is an egoistic desire to enjoy for self-benefit at the expense of others, and egoism does not let itself become uprooted easily.

Kabbalists say that we need to rise above this attraction, above the pull of earthly life, and then we will see another world, another perception of reality, another existence entirely. But where do we find the courage? It is not personal courage. It is given from above, from nature itself. Certain souls receive this awakening directly, and the rest of humanity can follow their guidance, gradually accumulating the inner strength necessary to break free.

This is why the path can feel endless. We try again and again for years, and nothing seems to change. But such effort does not go to waste. It accumulates. Every attempt adds another portion of energy, more of an inner reserve, until the rope finally snaps.

How can we avoid despair in this process? It is when we understand that there is no other way. Despair itself is part of the realization. There is nowhere else to go, no substitute path. If we have a certain destiny, we will accumulate enough strength and break free. If we do not have such a destiny yet, we remain tied until the next awakening cycle. We call it “luck” only because we do not know all of the system’s laws that we exist in.

What multiplies this strength? Any motion to positively connect with others, and also to learn about who we are, our nature, the general nature surrounding us, and the way in which we evolve from our nature to discover how we can harmonize with the broader nature around us.

In short, we escape to the next broader sphere far more easily as part of a group than alone. The shared striving, the common effort, becomes a vessel that holds the energy needed to enter a free orbit.

How can we trust this process if if we have not yet broken free ourselves? It is because without it, earthly life loses its foundation. Life has meaning only insofar as it leads to this step of breaking away from the rope.

What is the space we enter when we break free? It is freedom itself, i.e., freedom from egoism. Here, all our actions are egoistic, driven, controlled by the rope. There, we begin to act according to the laws of the free space: bestowal, love, and connection.

It is not that we fully understand freedom now. We only feel the pressure of the rope and want to run. Perhaps even that is childish at first. However, true freedom is not running away from suffering—it is liberation from egoism. That is the meaning of life: to reach such freedom.
