How Is the Language of Kabbalah a Language of Branches?

The spiritual world and the soul are desires in their direct and pure form. However, the wisdom of Kabbalah discusses states where the soul is dressed in a body. Kabbalists do not describe states of a soul that is unclothed in a body, yet indeed they know about them, and are also connected with them.

In order to rise above the barrier that separates this world from the spiritual world, we request an anti-egoistic screen that feels itself free from the body, i.e., from the desire to enjoy for self-benefit alone.

During our life in this world while our soul is dressed in a body, we need to correct our every desire so that the body presents no barrier between us and other bodiless souls. That state is called “the end of correction” (Gmar Tikkun).

A unique language is needed to describe states of souls because our whole language is based solely on this world’s ideas. Therefore, where can we take words from in order to describe states of souls?

Kabbalists saw that even though the body is made of completely different material, its structure is equal to soul’s structure. Accordingly, it can call the soul’s parts and spiritual actions by the same names as the parts of the body and its actions, even though they share no connection. Therefore, they invented “the language of branches.”

Kabbalists thus use the usual earthly language in order to describe spiritual phenomena. Yet if we wish to read about what happens with the soul and not with the body, we need to seek a spiritual meaning in the words, and not a material one. In other words, even if we yet have no knowledge of the words’ spiritual meanings, we must remain with this question and not depict material images. Otherwise, we will exit this world.

Kabbalists gave us the language of branches and obligated us to study the books of Kabbalah so that during the study we would make efforts to understand what is concealed behind such words, i.e., the various spiritual qualities or phenomena. That is, we make efforts to translate what is written from the earthly human language into spiritual language, as if we translate each word from one language into another.
